Maisy and I are now four weeks into our milking experience. It's going smoothly, after a few kicked over pails, a good deal of patience on her part, and aching wrists on mine. I am not fast...at all, but that is part of the experience. It's amazing, and I'm glad I've had the chance to do it. Maisy has given 36 pounds of milk each day for the past two weeks. Incredible.
I am reading "The Family Cow" by Dirk van Loon, a very comprehensive, easy to understand book about what is necessary to keep a family cow. It has answered all the questions I've had; the rest is learn as you go, and don't do THAT again. Luckily, cows are forgiving. The two things they love most...grain and routine, oh, and a good scratch behind the ears.
Soon I'll figure out how to make ice cream, clotted cream and butter with Maisy's milk...another book to read, and more experimenting.
