I am a huge fan of anything British, so much so that I truly believe I was born in the wrong country. That being said, I don't begin each morning with a rousing rendition of "God Save the Queen", and frankly, strong tea makes my stomach hurt, but I do love and will buy at whatever the cost; usually double, British house and garden magazines.
This word is used all through the publications; I see it everywhere, and it always fascinates me. I don't see it much in domestic magazines, if I ever have. We need to focus more on 'custom made articles', of any kind, and from any source. Custom made is what people do on a small scale; artists, bakers, seamstresses, upholsterers, farmers, cobblers, carpenters, jewelers...the list is endless, or should be.
I want to know who made what I spend my hard-earned cash on, where it originated, and how much work went into it. I want to pay a fair price for it, to sustain the maker, buy what I need or want at the moment, then come back to buy more, if the purchase has enhanced my life. I don't want to have to go to a huge, impersonal store. I like service and conversation when I buy things I need.
Bespoke. My new favorite word.
